The new Netflix TV show, One Day, came out just a few days before Valentine’s Day and has tossed around the hearts of many, including mine.
This show is based on the book One Day, written by David Nichollos, and its rendition with Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess in 2011 (after the book’s release in 2009) inspired filmmaker Molly Manners to create a TV series based on this spectacular novel. And spoiler alert: if you want to watch this show, I’d suggest not reading it because it’ll give away the whole plot!
The TV show starts off in 1988 in Edinborough, where the two main characters first meet at their graduation party. Dexter Mayhew, a laid-back, effortlessly charming young, blonde-haired, blue-eyed guy, charms Emma Morley, a shy, academically minded brown-haired, hazel-eyed girl. Dexter comes from a very rich English family, their estates stretching far across Europe, and Emma comes from working-class Indian parents who immigrated to England just before she was born. Each episode is a new year in their lives and shows how they grow towards and apart from each other. Every episode begins and ends on June 15th of that year, which is St. Swithin’s Day. Many English people believe that if it rains on St. Swithin’s Day, then it will rain the rest of the summer, which is very symbolic of their relationships’ unpredictability.
This “one day”—the day of their graduation—is the day that altered the course of both Dexter and Emma’s entire lives. And throughout the season, there will continue to be many references to this “one day”. The day they first met was the day that changed everything. Throughout the 14 episodes of the season, they grow closer, then get into arguments and stop talking, get jealous of each other’s boyfriend or girlfriend, and then grow closer again. This tossing and turning of feelings between Dexter and Emma has the same effect on the audience; feelings of uncertainty and longing create a very desirable want for the two of them to be together. It becomes very clear throughout the episodes that these two are meant to be together, but time and circumstance just don’t allow it.
I quickly became obsessed with this show and highly recommend watching it—just watch it with someone else and while you’re not sad! Even from the very first episode, the creative film work and intentional cinematography creates an attachment between you and the characters; you feel what they feel and want what they want. As their relationship develops, it’s almost like your relationship with Dexter and Emma is growing too. You begin to understand them and develop sympathy for the very many situations and circumstances that they are put in. This show, I would say, is also a coming-of-age story. The main premise of this show (besides their relationship) is them finding themselves through their careers and futures. They are both very confused and unsure of what cards lie in their deck and how to play them alongside each other.
So, if you’re looking for a new show that has deep and sincere meaning and will really make you feel something, watch One Day!!!
