Freshman Survival Guide

On the first day of school, did you wake up with butterflies fluttering in your stomach? Did you beg your mom to let you stay in the comfort of your warm, cozy bed? Did you chug down a gallon of scalding hot coffee just to stay awake?

Whether you felt like Kurt from Glee or Troy from High School Musical the first week of school, check out these tips to help you get through your first year at THS:

  • If you get lost or need help, ask an upperclassmen or a teacher who isn’t in a hurry.
  • Make sure you have your locker combination written down before you get rid of the combination strip that comes with the lock. You’ll be sorry you threw that away!
  • Joining club and sports is the perfect way to meet new people who share the same interests as you.
  • If you’re a bus rider, don’t loiter! You will have plenty of time to talk to your friends later, but the most important thing to do is find your bus in the hectic senior parking lot.
  • The halls of Towson can feel like a maze, so it’s important to memorize where you’re going. Find the stairs that get you to your classes as quickly as possible.
  • Though some upperclassmen may tell you there is a pool on the fifth floor, don’t be fooled. They’re just messing with you…or are they?
  • Organization is the key to getting the grades that you want. The A day/B day schedule can play with your mind when it comes to packing up everything you need for the day. Make sure you always rearrange your binder or consider using a separate binder for A days and B days.
  • There is always a sporting event going on at Towson, so come and watch one! It’s a great way to support our school and see what the Generals are up to.
  • Homecoming is coming up faster than you think, so don’t forget to participate in Spirit Week! It’s a fantastic way to show school pride, and, if you’re lucky, some teachers may offer extra credit.
  • You’re not the only one who is sitting alone at lunch. Don’t be afraid to sit with someone who is unaccompanied, even if they are busy playing on their phone. They may not show it, but you just made their day…and you might make a new friend.
