Jersday Thursday: The Next Big Towson Tradition

Don’t you just hate Thursdays? Do you ever feel like Thursday is just another day in the middle of the week and you’re just trying to survive and make it to the weekend? Does Thursday ever mock you with that “Friday feeling,” even though it isn’t actually Friday, yet?

Here at Towson, for a small group of students, Thursday is one of the most anticipated days of the week. Every Thursday, those students exhibit their favorite sports jerseys in a tradition known as “Jersday Thursday.”

Jersday Thursday first started in the 2015-16 school year, and the Jersday tradition quickly grew among a small band of friends. It was started by former JV basketball assistant coach and Young Life Towson leader, Kyle Banal. His love for jerseys rubbed off on a few Towson students, especially seniors Michel Donohue, Tanner Meeks, and Jack Saunders. The trio is considered the pioneers of Jersday at Towson.

Senior Nick Wynn shared the story of his first Jersday experience, “I was first exposed to Jersday through Michael Donohue and Tanner Meeks one dreary winter day when I saw them in trig class with vintage basketball jerseys on. I asked them if there was a special occasion and all I heard in response was, ‘Jersday’. My day was immediately brightened and next Thursday I was rocking a jersey myself.”

Every Thursday, a sea of colors from all the different jerseys parades the halls of Towson. Jerseys are sported by the students from basketball, baseball, football, and soccer, teams (from the past or present).

Jersday brings a whole new vibe and fresh feel to Thursdays. Personally, I’m always eager to see what new jerseys are shown off to the rest of the school. So, dig deep into your wardrobe and grab your favorite jersey (or dust off an old one) to participate in Jersday Thursday.  Let’s make Towson lively and unforgettable.
