Romeo, Oh Romeo, Where Art Thou Promposal?

Early Tuesday morning on March 31st, senior Jamesy Wood woke up thinking it was just another Tuesday. Suddenly her phone started buzzing as her friends were impatiently waiting for her to come to school… today was a special day and Jamesy didn’t even know it. “I actually woke up that morning because my friends were calling me and texting me saying I need to get to school ASAP, so I was suspicious but I didn’t really know what was going on. When I pulled up to school my heart totally stopped! I was so shocked and excited! I mean seriously, that’s the type of thing you dream of as a little girl,” says Jamesy.
If you happened to be there for Jamesy’s big moment, what you witnessed was a promposal in action. Looking for a way to show you care about them in the most outrageous way? The answer is orchestrating a promposal. If you haven’t been on social media lately, a “promposal” is when someone sets up an over-the-top way to ask someone to prom.
Promposals have been around for a while, but once social media got a hold of the trend, it became a sport. From helicopter rides to cheesy puns (using – you guessed it! – a pizza) promposals have become a big deal. The days of simply asking someone, “Do you want to go to prom?” are just a mere memory of the past. This generation is doing it bigger, better, and a bit more obnoxious.
When Senior Alex Harrison woke up early for school, he had a plan in mind: he was going to execute a promposal. As I looked at the huge poster taped on the school mural, I couldn’t help but be amazed at his dedication. It was 7am and my eyes were barely open, but here was Alex on a ladder about to profess his desire to take this girl to prom, complete with a painted tarp and teddy bear. “I’ve always been attracted to Jamesy from the first time I met her. She was really easy to talk to and just a genuinely a great person,” said Alex.
“I was definitely caught off guard, but it was a ‘beary’ pleasant surprise! If my promposal was any indication, prom is going to be a night to remember,” Jamesy said.
Alex recalls how he came up with his promposal idea: “I’m not the most creative person… so figuring out how to ask was a little tricky. I wanted to make it big. So I went to Home Depot and bought a paper tarp and some paint, but I still couldn’t figure out what to write. It took me awhile but I decided that there was nothing more romantic than or as cheesy as a stuffed bear. I figured a stuff bear would also give her something to remember the moment.”
Alex decided to put a ribbon around the neck of the bear that said “PROM?” but he had one more dilemma: what was he going to write on the poster? “I was going to initially use the line, “I couldn’t bear to go to prom with anyone else,” but I found that one on the Internet and wanted to come up with my own line. So I reworded it slightly and started painting. It actually took me a couple tries, but I finally got it right after I went through 3 tarps.”
Now, how exactly did Alex get that huge poster on the mural wall? That took some trial and error. “My friend Talbot and I got to school a little early, and we initially wanted to hang it off the roof, but our common sense kicked in and we opted out of the risk of an office referral,” said Alex. And what was Jamesy’s reaction? “The first words out of her mouth were “of course.” Job well done, Alex Harrison! Setting the standard for junior guys since 2015!

Just when I thought Alex’s proposal was hard to top, senior Talula Miller got a promposal from Senior Sam Petti that you would only witness in a Nicholas Sparks movie. “He said he just wanted to take his dog for a walk at Robert E Lee Park. I was super surprised when I saw them and screamed, because it scared me since I didn’t notice the four of them standing there.” Talula admits that she hates dances, but she’s excited to at least have a date now.
I’m really curious to know what promposals will be in the future, perhaps people will be in flying cars, and on the back there will be a banner that says, “Hop in and let’s jet to prom.” Recent promposals are clear indicators that it’s only up from here — they will get even more elaborate as time goes on.
