Angels of the Salvation Army

Volunteering at the Salvation Army for the holiday season is like making miracles happen for the less fortunate. Whether it’s picking an “angel” – a child to shop for – or distributing gifts, anything is worth doing to put a smile on kids’ faces when they see the glimmering ribbons and shining presents.

Every year, the Salvation Army offers volunteer opportunities, especially around the winter and holiday season. This year, my family and I were “Santa’s elves.” Every gift was labeled with a child’s name, and, as elves, we were to distribute these gifts to their designated “angel box” with the matching name.

From scooters to skateboards, dolls to action figures, the place was filled. Just about anything a kid would want was there, and it was amazing to see that every angel’s box was filled with these toys. All the boxes weren’t stuffed with games and toys, though. Many angels asked for warm coats and pants to help combat frigid winter temperatures.

For many of the angels, these gifts were the only gifts that they would be opening on Christmas day. It was amazing to see how these children were not asking for things they wanted, but for things that they needed. With the amount of donated toys and electronics, there was more than enough for every angel to open at least three secret gifts from jolly ol’ St. Nick on Christmas morning.

Working as Santa’s elf is a great way to help the children in need. The opportunity was unforgettable. My family and I will be returning next year.

If you have time, come out and help the Salvation Army during the holiday season. Make the kids happy and become your very own Christmas angel.
