Girls Varsity Basketball Team Turns Heads
The Girls’ Varsity Basketball Team has gotten off to an explosive start this year. With three wins and two losses, the team is ready for two more months of fierce competition. With a smaller team than last year, the twelve varsity girls have become very close.
After losing crucial seniors, the younger players have started stepping up. Sophomore Emmy German leads the team with the most points and receptions, while Junior Jordan Gans leads in rebounds. These stats only scrape the surface of the Girls’ Varsity Basketball team. Part of what makes the team so great is how familiar the girls are with each other. Sara Pugh says “our team is super close; we are basically a family.” The girls have shared many moments together, from Sara falling on a girl’s head while she was going for a rebound during the Hereford game, to Taylor Crawford explaining to Coach Moyer what a “hoagie” actually is. According to Philesha Carter, it is this bond that makes the team unique. Philesha, who recently transferred to THS from Western High, says, “We have good team chemistry. Coming from a different school, I definitely feel welcomed.”
Even with Sara Pugh falling on another girl during the Hereford game, the girls were able to come back in the second half with Emmy German and Sam Chodkoski scoring eleven points between the two of them. Shelby Fragetta called this game the most memorable one of the season because the girls “came close to beating such a good team.”
The Girls’ Varsity Basketball team has three home games coming up: Pikesville on December 22, and Loch Raven and Kenwood after Winter Break. Be sure to come out and support the Lady Generals.
