Trump’s Travel Ban Faces Strong Opposition

President Donald Trump has followed through on his campaign promise of strict restriction on immigration. On January 30th, Trump signed an executive order imposing a 90-day travel ban on the seven predominantly Muslim nations of Iraq, Syria, Iran, Sudan, Libya, Somalia, and Yemen. The order also calls for a 120-day suspension of the U.S. Refugee Admissions Program.

Trump’s actions sparked very strong nationwide opposition. Protesters around the nation executed sit-ins in multiple major airports. The list of cities who broke out in airport protests include Los Angeles, New York, Houston, Seattle, Atlanta. Our very own BWI Airport in Maryland was filled with those fighting against Trump’s travel ban.

The protests were well covered by the press and were trending on social media. Under Snapchat’s “Discover” section, protesters could post videos and pictures of their participation in the fight against the executive order. You hear their outrage against Trump’s order with a plethora of chants such as “Let them in!” and “F*ck your wall!”

The wishes of these protesters were later granted after a federal judge from Seattle placed a temporary ban on the travel ban. The airports roared in joy and triumph when the news was broken. They cheered the arrivals of the immigrants and welcomed them with open arms.

Trump and his administration would eventually appeal the judge’s decision. But on February 9th, the three judges from the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit ruled unanimously ruled against Trump’s travel ban, declaring it to be unconstitutional. Minutes after the ruling, a salty Trump resorted to Twitter and tweeted, “SEE YOU IN COURT, THE SECURITY OF OUR NATION IS AT STAKE!” signaling that he is going to take the issue to the Supreme Court.

The battle of immigration is not yet over, but for now, immigrants from the previously banned countries are welcomed to the United States.
