High Hopes for Towson’s “It’s Academic” Team
If you’ve been paying any attention to Towson’s new morning announcement show, you’ve probably heard tidbits of zany trivia questions from junior Patrick Hutson. Daily challenges vary from knowing what famous author believed in fairies (Sir Arthur Conan Doyle) to remembering which President could simultaneously write in Greek and Latin (James Garfield). The new segment is sponsored by Towson High’s It’s Academic quiz-bowl team. Described by senior captain Walter Young as a “small but passionate group,” the team meets every Wednesday to hone their mental reflexes in preparation for filmed Jeopardy-like competitions between schools. Each match is filmed at WJZ Studios in Baltimore and airs a few weeks later on local CBS affiliate WJZ-TV.
Towson’s team opened their season with a match on October 18th against Easton and Manchester Valley. Spoiler alert: “Towson dominated the competition,” says Walter Young, captain and one of the select three teammates on the TV team. Walter joined Patrick Hutson and Walker Miller-Breetz to pull in a win by about 300 points.
Tune in to WJZ-TV on December 6th at 10am to watch this entire match and show your support for our Generals. On February 28th, the Generals take on Dulaney and Howard High for a rivalry match. Come out to the WJZ-TV studio to watch the exciting contest. Contact Ms. Meehan for more details.
If you’re interested in joining the team, It’s Academic meets every Wednesday in Mrs. Meehan’s room. Meetings are open and the club is always “looking to welcome new members,” says Walter. Come out or watch your local listings to check out Towson’s wittiest team.
