When you walked into school the Friday morning of the pep rally, you might have seen something unexpected in the first floor hallway. Lights, posters, streamers, balloons, glitter, and beads hung from the walls and ceiling in celebration of homecoming.

Decorating the hallways was a new edition to spirit week this year. SGA president Zach Caplan was taking an initiative to try to boost Towson’s overall school spirit.

“One of my main goals as the president of the student body is to really make students proud and spirited about being a Towson General,” says Zach.

Each class got a section of the hallway – the seniors started it off by the cafeteria, then the juniors, sophomores, freshman, and SGA were at the end of the hallway by the custodial office.

Thursday afternoon, steering committee members gathered volunteers and stayed after school to string lights, hang posters with class slogans, tape balloons, drape streamers – making the hallway explode with school spirit. Each class incorporated their class colors into their display along with decorations that went with the homecoming theme, Mardi Gras.

“It was a lot of fun to put them all up,” says senior Morgan Hylton, “they made the day feel more special outside of the pep rally.”

Since the freshman class doesn’t have their class colors yet, they came up with a creative way to choose their colors by hanging sheets of different color paper on the wall, asking freshman to sign their favorite color. The colors with the most signatures won.

Students stopped to take pictures in front of their classes wall and admired how spirited the hallway looked.

The senior class taped the floor with blue and silver duct tape and hung up a large sheet of blue paper for each senior to sign. Their class colors are blue and silver.

“Decorating the hallways really created school spirit. It was very ‘high school’ and let everyone get involved in the decorating,” says senior Anna Henderson who came to help decorate the senior section.

The overall vibe created by the decorations, the excitement of pep rally, and spirit week brought everyone together to celebrate Towson and the upcoming school year.
