Towson Takes Silver in BCPS Physics Olympics

On December 5th, Towson physics and chemistry students (along with Mr. Jochmans and Mr. Geckle) travelled to Dulaney at 8:30 AM to compete in the annual Physics Olympics and Chemathon.

The Generals were represented by four teams (two for physics, two for chemistry) who competed in challenges related to their respective fields. In the Physics Olympics, for example, the teams had to build a propeller out of paper, tape, paperclips, and a CD.

Although this was considered a competition (there was even a fake Olympic torch made out of a plunger), the general atmosphere was relaxed and friendly. The two events provide a rare opportunity for the county STEM community to meet and celebrate science in schools once a year.

Of course, Towson is still proud to have won several awards in the Physics Olympics. Team Towson 2, comprised of juniors, won first and second in two of the individual challenges, while Towson Team 1 (all seniors) took second in the entire event. These feats are even more impressive considering there were 27 total teams!

Congratulations to all the Towson chemistry and physics students who represented the science department. To future chemistry and physics students, you don’t have to wait another four years for these Olympics, so consider participating next year in this creative and unique contest.
