Clubs to Join at THS: Did You Even Know These Existed?
Are you terrified to join a new club because you have no clue what it’s about? Do you waste your time watching mindless TV shows or surfing the Internet when you could be making new friends? Read below to find out about some of Towson’s clubs that most of you have probably never heard of. It’s never too late to join!
Robotics Club: Run by Mr. Weber and Mr. Schneider, students use engineering and math skills to build robots that compete against robots from other schools. These competitions are designed as games, so students must work together in teams in order to program the robots to complete the given task, such as picking up objects. This club meets Tuesdays and Wednesday in room 122.
Best Buddies: Managed by Mr. Muneses, the club’s goal is to connect students with other students with intellectual disabilities and development disabilities (ID-DI) by creating one-to-one friendships. Ultimately, they hope to achieve complete inclusion within our school for people with ID-DI. They usually meet on Wednesdays before school at 7:00 AM in room 206. The first couple of meetings have focused on the pairing of buddies and the education of new members. Last year, the Best Buddies club attended a special arts festival at Oregon Ridge Park, where the buddies performed songs and danced. This year, on October 26, they visited Weber’s Farm with other students from Hereford. On November 15th, they held a 5K fundraiser.
Gay Straight Alliance (GSA): Supervised by Mr. Dalsimer, this club promotes tolerance and awareness in our school. The purpose of this club is to create a bond of fellowship between like-minded people and to make all students – no matter what their sexual orientation – feel comfortable at Towson High School. In the past, the GSA has supported the Day of Silence and National Coming Out Day. They have also attended some joint meetings at Carver Center for the Arts. The GSA hopes to raise support for actions in the LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transsexual) community.
Swim Enthusiasts: The club’s main purpose is to allow swimmers and other water sports enthusiasts (polo, rowing) to share their stories and to receive encouragement from other athletes. The club meets once a month in trailer 6 (but on a different day each month). In the future, they will be making t-shirts and swim caps in order to “spread school spirit and the word about other Towson swimmers, not just Michael Phelps,” says Mr. Blair, the club’s administrator.
