Cryptic Corner: Sky Falls

Cryptic Corner: Sky Falls

You’ve heard of the expression “raining cats and dogs,” but what would you do if frogs started falling from the sky? What about fish? Indeed, this has happened not once but many times all over the world, and it’s not just animals that have dropped from the sky.  A multitude of objects have fallen out of the blue.

In September of 1969, over a hundred golf balls fell from the sky in Punta Gorda, Florida.  Some speculate that the balls had been sucked up by a tornado then dropped from the sky, but no tornado was reported that day.  Things have been falling from the sky for years, but recently, there have been many reports of the mysterious “sky falls”, and not just in the United States.

In Salta Province, Argentina, on April 6, 2007, a man by the name of Christian Oneto Gaona was taking a hiking trip with a group of friends in the San Bernardo Mountains. After two hours of hiking, Gaona noticed that a large number of spiders were covering the ground. As the group continued up the mountain, the amount of spiders increased. Looking up, Gaona saw that the spiders were falling from the sky!  Below is a picture that Gaona took of the phenomenon.

Many of these occurrences remain mysteries but sometimes they can be explained, and for pretty weird reasons.

In 1997, a Russian patrol boat stationed in the Sea of Japan rescued a Japanese fishing boat.  When the men were asked what had happened, they said that “a cow fell from the sky and sank us.”  The Russians, not believing the fishermen’s story, placed them under arrest.  Two weeks later, a member of the Russian air force came forward.  They told Japanese authorities that one of the fellow air force members had stolen a cow for beef and brought it aboard his flight. The cow, frustrated by the small enclosed space, began to panic. Air force members said that in order to save the aircraft from damage and themselves from injury, they threw the cow out of the plane.   Falling 30,000 feet, the animal crashed in to a fishing boat. The fishermen were then released.

Now that you know it can rain things other than water, you may want to consider a helmet the next time you leave the house.
