Glitter Bombs for Towson’s Football players
Glitter, paint, and posterboard of every color litter the floor. This mess is nothing new to the Towson High School cheerleaders who make posters for the senior boys on the varsity football team.
It’s been a tradition since cheerleading coach Maureen Shannon came to the team three years ago. Messages like, “Hustle, Hit and Never Quit!” and “One Team, One Dream” are drawn in big, sparkly letters along with the last name of the football player and/or his number.
For homecoming, the girls make large footballs that have the players’ number on them. They go along with the helmets that Coach Knippenberg’s mom makes for each player on the team. “Player cards” that include all the athletic information of each player are made for the senior game. It’s like their own giant sized baseball card!
Every poster is unique to each girl’s personality. It’s a way for them to get creative and add their special touch to each poster made.
“My favorite part about making them is trying to find new ways to decorate them… glitter is definitely a necessity when creating mine,” says sophomore Jessica Vaugh.
For every home game, the posters are hung up on Thursday afternoons in front of the football locker room to be displayed for students to see as they walk by the cafeteria. On the mornings of the game, they’re taken down and hung up at the field for the fans to see.
“Students see our posters and comment on how it’s sweet of us to take time out of our schedule to make them,” says sophomore Emily Goss.
Along with adding to Towson’s overall school spirit, they’re a way for the cheerleaders to show their support for the team.
“My friends and I on the team think it’s cool that the cheerleaders make us posters. We appreciate it,” says senior Anthony Grant.
Look out for more posters coming this fall season!
