Do you know the capital of Uzbekistan? Can you name what countries don’t use the metric system?

These are the types of questions that were featured at Towson’s first trivia bowl on February  22nd. 32 teams came out to answer questions about math, the history of Maryland, sports, and pop culture.

The teams were split into four rooms with eight teams per room. During the first round, each team was allowed eight minutes total to complete eight questions, allowing them more time to focus on the difficult questions and less time on the easy ones. However, things got heated during the second round when each team got eight questions, but only got one minute per question. The final round consisted of twelve questions, presented one by one.  The answers were then run up to the judges by a selected team member.

“The questions were sort of obscure and definitely got harder as we went along, but they were manageable,” says senior Anna Henderson who was part of the “Alex Trebek” team.

“My team got really competitive and into it. We had team cheers and war paint!” adds senior Morgan Hylton, who was also an “Alex Trebek” team member.

There was not a set prize for the winner other than bragging rights for being Towson’s trivia champs. Devon Leslie, a member of the “O’Trivia Newton John Let’s Get Quizzical Team,” as so excited about the event that she and her team members celebrated their hard work with ice-cream after the competition was over.

Vicente Iglesias, member of the Alex Trebek team, said that there were some very random questions like, “What was the roman numeral for 892?” or “What position did Cal Ripken play in his first start?”

Overall, the competition was a success and the teams had a blast. It was a great way to get students involved in some healthy competition and learn a couple new fun facts.
